Middle School
Middle School, the glorious in-between time when students move towards independence in their studies and still need guidance and direction. Academically, middle school students take on challenging coursework preparing them for their high school credits. Socially, this is a time to deepen friendships. At Grace Academy, students can choose from the core classes of Math, Science, History, and English as well as electives of Keyboarding, Art, Technology, and Spanish. Students can join the Student Council for additional opportunities to connect with friends and the community.
Middle School Classes
English and History
Middle School English
English 1 for Middle School cover the first 14 chapters of Shurley English and assignments from IEW. Students will build a grammar foundation through memorizing prepositions and working with the eight parts of speech. In addition, the student will learn writing basics moving from one paragraph to three paragraph assignments using topic/clincher sentences, writing dress-ups, and editing. Students should have grammar and reading skills appropriate for 7th grade.
English 2 for Middle School builds on curriculum and skills from English 1 covering chapters 15 to the end of the book in Shurley Englilsh and more challenging IEW writing. Sutdent should have completed chapters 1 -14 of Shurley English or comparable grammar with experience writing three-paragraph Institute of Excellence in Writing assignments
Students purchase both the Shurley English Level 7 Book and the IEW Wonders of Science Student Book
Math and Science
Online Saxon 76
Saxon Math 7/6 will help middle-school students gain a solid foundation of algebraic reasoning and geometric skills as they prepare to move on to higher-level math and algebraic reasoning in Saxon 8/7 or Algebra =. It teaches math with a spiral approach, which emphasizes incremental development of new material and continuous review of previously taught concepts. This is an online class meeting weekly on Mondays. Video class lessons available each day.
Saxon 87
Building upon the principles taught in Saxon Math 7/6, the Saxon 87 textbook reviews arithmetic calculation, measurements, geometry and other skills, and introduces pre-algebra, ratios, probability and statistics. Students will specifically learn about adding/subtracting/multiplying fractions, equivalent fractions, the metric system, repeating decimals, scientific notation, Pi, graphing inequalities, multiplying algebraic terms, the Pythagorean Theorem, the slope-intercept form of linear equations, and more.
Saxon Algebra 1/2
This text is the culmination of prealgebra mathematics, a full pre-algebra course and an introduction to geometry and discrete mathematics. Some topics covered include Prime and Composite numbers; fractions & decimals; order of operations, coordinates, exponents, square roots, ratios, algebraic phrases, probability, the Pythagorean Theorem and more. Utilizing an incremental approach to math, your students will learn in small doses at their own pace, increasing retention of knowledge and satisfaction!
Anatomy
All creation is awe-inspiring, but the work of the human body, created in the very image of God, is especially jaw-dropping! This study of anatomy and physiology showcases the intricacy and design of the human body, from DNA and cell creation to the skeletal, muscular, digestive, respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous/endocrine, immune, and intergumentary systems. Integrated with health and nutrition information, as well as plenty of scripture and biblical application, this complete guide to the human body is written in an enjoyable, conversational tone that will keep kids engaged
Electives
Technology - Google

Students will be introduced to gmail, google docs, google slides, google sheets, and other google apps and work to increase their keyboarding skills. Coding concepts will also be introduced.
Spanish

Students are introduced to Spanish and learn how to ask and answer questions, give and follow directions, purchase items, make small talk, and present the gospel.
Art

The student will explore art techniques and medium through the study of artists. In addition to exploring different art medium, students will be learning digital and video art. Students will be working on an Ipad.
Ipads are provided for classroom use.
Home Economics

This course proved students with general household and personal resource management skills. Goals include teaching family budgeting, meal planning and preparation, basic nutrition, intro to sewing, and practical family management.
